Watson was born in Paris to British parents who divorced when she was young. She and her brother went to live with their mother in Oxfordshire, England.

In 1999, casting began for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the film adaptation of British author J. K. Rowling's best-selling novel. Casting agents found Watson through her Oxford theatre teacher, and producers were impressed by her confidence. After eight auditions, at the age of just 10, she was cast in the role of Hermione Granger, a school friend of Harry Potter at Hogwarts school of wizardry.

Emma attended Brown University in 2009 in the USA; graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in English literature in 2014.

Emma is also a certified yoga and meditation instructor.
