Clan Buchanan Society International Inc.

CBSI Coat of Arms
The Clan Buchanan Society International uses the coat of arms granted by the Lyon Court in 2002 [123] on its official correspondence. However, it uses a self-assumed coat of arms on its flag, called the Black Lion Banner, which predates the official arms.

The Arms:
Or a lion rampant Sable, armed and langued Gules between three boars heads erased Gules all within a double tressure flory counterflory Sable.

The Crest:
Above the shield is placed an helmet befitting an Incorporated Society with mantling Sable doubled Or, on a wreath of the liveries is set for crest a phoenix rising Azure, flames Proper, on his head a cap of honour Gules turned up Ermine, tufted on top by a rose Gules all within two laurel branches disposed orleways proper.

The Black Lion Banner has a field of gold/yellow charged with a black lion rampant with red claws and tongue shedding five silver tears all within a black double tressure flory-counter-flory. (This might be described in heraldic language as, "Or, a lion rampant Sable, armed and langued Gules charged with five goutte Argent all within a double tressure flory-counter-flory of the second.") The lion rampant on the field of gold within the double tressure flory-counter-flory alludes to the arms of the Clan chief and is the charge and tressure of most Buchanan arms. The silver tears refer to the sadness [124] of the Clan at not having a chief. A variation of the Black Lion Banner is used on some CBSI apparel. The CBSI has received permission of the newly confirmed Chief of the Clan, John Michael Baillie-Hamilton Buchanan to continue the use of the Black Lion Banner by its members.

The Motto:
In an escroll above the crest is set the motto,
“COLLIGITE FRAGMENTA NE PEREANT”
(Collect the fragments lest they perish).

Recorded in Lyon Register Volume 81, page 65, 6 July 2002.
